It seems only a blink of an eye ago that Romance Academy Part 2 was beginning, but this Monday night brings our 6th and final session! Romance Academy – Part 2 has been attended by 8 young people at MBC for the North Leeds Academy and 9 in the South Leeds Academy. We joined together last weekend for a residential in the beautiful setting of Wyedale Hall, near Scarborough. As well as the sessions we had some great team games, good food and an afternoon in a very sunny Scarborough with chips on the beach and of course a trip to the legendary Harbour Bar!

Romance Academy – Part 2 is for those young people who graduated from the full Romance Academy which began at MBC in September 2009. The sessions we have put together hopefully reflect the ages and stage of life for these young people, the session topics are as follows.

- 1 – Romance Academy reflection; then and now.
- 2 – The internet and pornography.
- 3 – Social networking and Relationship overload.
- 4 – Uniquely you – girls and guys sessions.
- 5 – Who knows me? – Identity and what you share.
- 6 – Family matters.

This Monday after our final session, the group are bringing along a parent as we head to X:Scape for an evening of Laser Tag and a meal together to end the course in style. Once again I am so grateful to the young people for their commitment to taking part, their honesty and willingness to share, learn and debate. We hope they have both enjoyed the course and found the content helpful for now and the future.
 

As always it has been a joy and privilege to work with Hannah Dey from the Chapel A youth project and I’m sure everyone at MBC will join me in wishing her well as she takes a break from youth work to go on maternity leave soon!

The opening night of “GLUE” the new group for years 7 and 8 was agreed to be a great success all round.

With fun games, hot spot questions for the leaders Zsuzsi and Andor, activities on an overview of the bible, I was impressed they had time to come up with a name. Following the theme of the other young people’s discipleship groups the group have called themselves GLUE. GLUE is also an acronym for ‘God Loves Us Eternally.’

Tonight (20/1/12) GLUE kick off the first night of ‘Dis:Course’, a seven-part course of Discovery and Discipleship.
GLUE has an open invitation for anyone in years 7 and 8, please contact Glenda for details or simply pop in to say hello tonight!

I am delighted to announce details for “GLUE”, the new youth group for those in school years 7 and 8.
This will be held initially at Moortown Baptist Church, in Graham’s office, on Friday evenings from 5.30-7.00 pm.
Andor and Zsuzsi will be leading this group.

Several invitations have already gone out, but please feel free to pass on names to me of anyone who you think may be interested.

The group will run from 5.30 – 7.00pm, and the bible study program throughout the year will also include social events and activities. It will run on a similar model to the Spectrum, Linx and Connections youth groups that already run during the week.

Hannah Dey (youth worker at the Chapel Allerton Youth Project) and Glenda are joining forces once again for a new initiative.

After the success of four Romance Academy’s over the past couple of years, both at MBC and Carr Manor High, we are now inviting those young people who graduated the 12 week course for ‘Romance Academy – Part 2′. Working with Sarah and Mark from the South Leeds Romance Academy, the six-session course (4 weeks and a weekend residential) has been written by our team to look specifically at what issues of sex and relationships mean to the young people a couple of years on from what they first learnt at Romance Academy.

In North Leeds we begin on Monday 9th January, meeting at MBC and are looking forward to all this new course will bring. Details to follow as things progress…

If the aim of an end of term party is having fun then Glenda’s idea of taking MBC’s Youth Team ten pin bowling was nothing short of inspirational.  That’s because out of all the “sports” I can think of ten pin bowling is perhaps unique in the way it has the wherewithal to cut through barriers of age, athleticism and ability at a stroke.

It’s a great leveller; an almost imperceptible turn of the wrist and the person who is trying to convert his or her third spare sends their next ball crashing down the gutter.  A fluky bounce off the lanes guide rails (yes some people did actually use them) and a ball that should by rights have plopped lethargically into the gutter suddenly gets a new lease of life, glances off the head pin and sends ten bemused skittles falling over themselves in mock astonishment.

Of course no competition (even at this level) is ever complete without prizes.  Sadly there were only three… Sarah, despite an incredible amount of competition, won the “Funniest Bowler” award, much to her amazement Gwynneth won the “Most Stylish” bowler prize and Paddy – who just a day before had been standing in church half naked in the role of the apostle Paul carried off the crown for the “Highest score”.

I say sadly because although only three people left with more than they brought, had others who deserved a prize received one the honours board would have read something like this.

Consistency:  Glenda – nine nines in a row and not one of them converted.

Balletic delivery: Hanna – how she didn’t fall over I’ll never know.

Exuberance:  Caitlin – there was a genuine Premier league quality to her celebrations.

Most competitive:  Nick – who once he realised the Highest Score was beyond his reach did all within his power to win the speed award.  For the record he peaked at 15.7 mph!

And finally the: “It’s the taking part and not the winning prize” has to go to Martyn whose performance on the night was quite simply beyond words!

Thanks Glenda, as my old mother in law used to say “a good time was had by all.”

Following Carols in the Park at Chapel Allerton on Sunday, the young people’s discipleship groups enjoyed good food on Sunday night.

Connections (pictured) opted for a Mexican dinner, while Linx and Spectrum enjoyed a good chilli from Claire & Nick Taylor & the hospitality of Helen Pemberton.

Caitlin was particularly proud of the group participation from Linx and Spectrum in the form of some familiar animals on stage in the park!
