Faith and Science - Charles Taylor - May 08

For many people, both Christian and secular, there appears to be a real conflict between scientific advances and Biblical traditions. The recent books A Brief History of Time by Hawking and The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins seem to leave little room for belief in God — indeed Dawkins’ recent work is a direct attack on the Christian faith. This has left many Christians on the defensive, others questioning their beliefs, and some feeling they are a laughing stock. In particular, the issue of evolution vs creation has become a battleground in the US and legal disputes have not yet reached a conclusion. The debate particularly affects young people at school when studying biology, geology, and physics. The erosion of their beliefs may go something like this: “the Bible teaches that God created the world in 6 days; we now know this is not true. Therefore the Bible cannot be trusted”.

Does the church adequately prepare them for this encounter?
