Divine : Make way for the next generation..

30 October 2011

October’s Divine service was special in many ways, not least because of the sheer number of young people who stepped up the mark and took part.  For example, as I arrived, what I mistook for a four “man” guard of honour snapped smartly to attention and extended their hands: “Hi John” said one young lady mischievously as she and her entourage each attempted to separate my hand from my wrist, “now you know how we feel on a Sunday morning.”

Once inside I found Caitlin, hosting in Glenda’s absence, charging round looking for her bible.  Bless her, when I asked if she could remember where she was when she last saw it, I was thrown one of those warm but withering looks that teenagers store up for well-meaning but irritating old duffers like me.

As is customary at Divine, on stage was a band.  However, this time worship leader Mike Stoodley had giving the regulars a night off in order to blood a Junior Divine band who, like Caitlin, were making their big stage debut.

Ensuring we could hear them clearly was the work of yet another bunch of talented teenagers; James, Matthew and Adam skilfully flying the sound desk through a whole raft of adventurous AV links.

October’s guest speaker was Duncan Stow, now a specialist youth worker with n:fuse … an organisation that organises courses for young people who want to discover their potential, overcome challenges and grow in their Christian faith.  Duncan’s calm and measured approach to the story of Rachel and how we should build our relationships had the eighty or so congregation totally engrossed.

Of course no Divine service is ever complete without food, and here again Debbie and the catering team were ably assisted by a group of young people.

Like me I’m sure you’ve heard it said time and time again that we need to encourage our young people because they are tomorrow’s church.  Well, I beg to differ. At MBC all these fine young people are most definitely the church of today.

PS: Don’t miss next month’s Divine Service on 27 November which will take place as part of the Mission weekend.
